Last weekend we were invited over for dinner at a friend’s house. He has a very nice, 3-bedroom cottage overlooking the Sierra Nevada about 150 miles from Sacramento, CA. Ranjit is a Bangladeshi national who emigrated to the United States in the late 90’s. He is married with 3 adorable kids, one of whom is a teenager.
Saturday rolled up and we were at his doorstep on time, as he had requested. Having a science background, I am always punctual and precise about a lot of things anyway.
I forgot to mention that I am also from Bangladesh originally, but I came to the US at a very young age. I do, however, speak Bangla (thanks to my parents) and I was excited to find that Ranjit had the Bangla Mega Pack from Dish Network.
This package has several channels, including one of my favorites, ATN Bangla ! This channel has absolutely everything from movies, news, music, cartoons. You name it, ATN Bangla has it.
As soon as we settled in, before proceeding to the table, we watched a bit of TV on his huge 46-inch Samsung plasma television set. Quite impressive, I must say. I was amazed at the picture quality. I am still stuck with an old TV that I bought at a yard sale a couple of years back.
After dinner I was anxious to continue watching TV as I never knew we could get Bangla programming in the United States. As I browsed through the channels, I also noticed that NTV Bangla was included with the Bangla Mega Pack ! This was another one of my favorites, ever since I first got exposed to it during my visits to Dhaka (capital of Bangladesh). I just had to ask my friend Ranjit.
“How much are you paying for all this ?”, I asked.
“Not that much. I think it’s something like 30 bucks a month.”, he replied.
“That’s it ? 30 bucks for 6 channels ?”
I started thinking it was time for me to ditch my cable company, get an LCD or plasma, and subscribe to Dish Network. On top of that they were running a special offer of 100 all-digital channels for only $9.99/mo. Now, that is a great deal. Included in this offer was an HD DVR, which could go perfectly with an LCD or plasma. Another bonus was TurboHD, Dish Network’s all-HD programming, free for 6 months.
That same night I went online and ordered Dish Network.
