The Flex Fuel Alternative Vehicle: The 2009 Insight

Honda has been blessed with many award-winning designs, including the Honda Insight of 2001. There are one trim levels to the Insight, including Base. The Base version is one of the more popular options, outselling other configurations. Like in 2000 the popular 1.0 liter VTEC-E has made this a popular choice for hatchback buyers nationwide. Competition from BMW is trailing in performance.

2001 Honda Insight Base Specs

Standard equipment in the Insight for 2000 and 2001 includes the 1.0 liter engine by Honda, weighing in at 3 cylinders and twelve valves. A 4-speed Automatic CVT Transaxle puts the power of the VTEC-E engine to the pavement. The has proven to be a popular configuration for the Insight.

The fuel system for the 2001 Insight is a PGM-FI design, using ELECTRIC/GAS fuel. The fuel flow is regulated by a electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The fuel capacity of the fuel tank is 10.60 gallons.

Steering control is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The Insight comes equipped with power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are drum. The car uses coil front springs and coil in the rear.

Vehicle Statistics

The dimensions of the Insight Base are 66.70 inches wide by 155.10 inches long. It sits 53.30 inches off the ground. It seats a standard two passengers, with 3 doors. The wheelbase of 94.50 allows for extra leg room for the rear passengers.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $18,980 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of $17,541. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 3-door Hatchback.

The standard warranty period for the Insight is 36 months, or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. The warranty also includes a warranty on the powertrain for 36 months or 36,000 miles respectively. This is standard in the hatchback market. Extended warranties are also available through the dealer.

Fuel Efficiency

The 2001 Insight gets 68 miles/gallon on the highway and only 61 in the city. This is below average for a hatchback car. The fuel conserving nature of the car is record-setting

There are several reasons why the Honda Insight Base sold well in 2001. Mainly the increase in availability and a marked improvement in quality meant the buying public was more apt to choose a Honda, specifically a Insight.
